On August 25, 2020, amid the Kenosha unrest, Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old male from Antioch, Illinois, shot and killed two protestors and wounded another during multiple confrontations at two locations. He was armed, allegedly illegally, with an AR-15 style rifle and one of the victims had a handgun. Those who had been chasing him were physically confronting Rittenhouse at the time that they were shot. Kenosha resident Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber, 26, were killed, while West Allis resident Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, lost his bicep, but reconstructive surgery enabled him to keep his arm. Two other protesters also chased and confronted Rittenhouse, and he either did not shoot at them, or missed.

The Harry F. Sinclair House is a mansion at the southeast corner of East 79th Street and Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. The house was built between 1897 and 1899. Over the first half of the 20th century, the house was successively the residence of businessmen Isaac D. Fletcher and Harry F. Sinclair, and then the descendants of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Director of New Netherland. The Ukrainian Institute of America acquired the home in 1955. After the house gradually fell into disrepair, the institute renovated the building in the 1990s. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Marquez Arbery, an unarmed 25-year-old black man, was pursued and fatally shot while jogging near Brunswick in Glynn County, Georgia. Arbery had been pursued by three white residents—Travis McMichael and his father Gregory, who were armed and driving a pickup truck, and William "Roddie" Bryan, who followed Arbery in a second vehicle—and was confronted and fatally shot by Travis McMichael. Arbery's killing and the delayed investigation and arrests of suspects reignited debates about racial inequality in the United States. The case has been widely reported internationally.
