Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016) and the 28th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Jade Bartlett and Michael Waldron, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Xochitl Gomez. In the film, Strange unleashes an unspeakable evil as he faces a new enemy.

David Gilbert is an American activist who is currently serving a 75 year-to-life sentence for felony homicide at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Shawangunk, New York. Gilbert was a founding member of the Columbia University chapter of Students for a Democratic Society and a member of the Weather Underground, a far-left militant organization. In October 1981, he participated in the robbery of a Brink's armored car, along with Kathy Boudin and other members of the Black Liberation Army.
