Christopher Scarver is an American convicted murderer best known for his fatal assault on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and Jesse Anderson at the Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994. The ninth named storm, fourth hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, Ian originated from a tropical wave that was located by the National Hurricane Center east of the Windward Islands on September 19. Two days later, the wave moved into the Caribbean Sea, where it brought winds and heavy rain to ABC islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the northern coasts of Venezuela and Colombia; it then showed signs of development of a tropical depression later that day, as its convection increased and became more focused. Later it intensified into a hurricane as it neared the Cayman Islands, before rapidly intensifying to a Category 2 Hurricane North West of the Cayman Islands, then as a high-end Category 3 hurricane as it made landfall in western Cuba. It weakened some over land, but restrengthened once it moved off of Cuba in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is the current cycle of the annual tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere. The season officially began on June 1, and will end on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) began issuing regular Tropical Weather Outlooks on May 15. No subtropical or tropical development occurred in the Atlantic prior to the start of the season, making this the first since 2014 not to have a pre-season named storm.

In June and July 2018, a widely publicised cave rescue saved the lives of members of a junior football team who were trapped inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Twelve members of the team, aged eleven to sixteen, and their 25-year-old assistant coach entered the cave on 23 June after football practice. Shortly afterwards, heavy rains partially flooded the cave, blocking their way out.

Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, also known as Jina Amini, was an Iranian-Kurdish woman who was arrested and abused by the Guidance Patrol of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a special police squad in charge of public implementation of Islamic hijab regulations, for her hijab not meeting the government's mandatory Hijab standards. The official report of the police was that she went into heart failure and died after two days in a coma. But further evidence shows that her head was beaten with a stick and smashed into a police car multiple times. This violent act of the Guidance Patrol led to Amini suffering a brain hemorrhage, coma, and subsequently tragic death. Her death has become a symbol of violence against women in Iranian society.

Hurricane Andrew was a powerful and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that struck the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana in August 1992. It is the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida in terms of structures damaged or destroyed, and was the costliest in financial terms until Hurricane Irma surpassed it 25 years later. It was the strongest landfalling hurricane in decades and the costliest hurricane to make landfall anywhere in the United States, until it was surpassed by Katrina in 2005. In addition, Andrew is one of only four hurricanes to make landfall in the United States as a Category 5, alongside the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, 1969's Camille, and 2018's Michael. Andrew caused major damage in the Bahamas and Louisiana, but the greatest impact was felt in South Florida, where the storm made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, with 1-minute sustained wind speeds as high as 165 mph (280 km/h) and a gust as high as 174 mph. Passing directly through the city of Homestead in Dade County, Andrew stripped many homes of all but their concrete foundations. In total, Andrew destroyed more than 63,500 houses, damaged more than 124,000 others, caused $27.3 billion in damage, and left 65 people dead.
