Empress Elisabeth of Austria was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary by marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I. She was born into the royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. Nicknamed Sisi, she enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying Emperor Franz Joseph I at the age of sixteen. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was unprepared and which she found uncongenial. Early in the marriage she was at odds with her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, who took over the rearing of Elisabeth's daughters, one of whom, Sophie, died in infancy. The birth of the heir apparent, Crown Prince Rudolf, improved her standing at court, but her health suffered under the strain, and she would often visit Hungary for its more relaxed environment. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary, and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria–Hungary in 1867.

Hurricane Ian is a strengthening tropical cyclone which recently made landfall in Western Cuba, and is currently impacting South Florida. The ninth named storm, fourth hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, Ian originated from a tropical wave that was located by the National Hurricane Center east of the Windward Islands on September 19. Two days later, the wave moved into the Caribbean Sea, where it brought winds and heavy rain to ABC islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the northern coasts of Venezuela and Colombia; it then showed signs of development of a tropical depression later that day, as its convection increased and became more focused. Later it intensified into a hurricane as it neared the Cayman Islands, before rapidly intensifying to a Category 2 Hurricane North West of the Cayman Islands, then as a high-end Category 3 hurricane as it made landfall in western Cuba. It weakened some over land, but restrengthened once it moved off of Cuba in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

William Floyd Collins, better known as Floyd Collins, was an American cave explorer, principally in a region of Central Kentucky that houses hundreds of miles of interconnected caverns within Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest cave system in the world. In the early 20th century, in an era known as the Kentucky Cave Wars, commercial cave owners and explorers in Kentucky entered into a bitter competition to exploit the bounty of caves for commercial profit from tourists, who paid to see the caves. In 1917, Collins had discovered and commercialized Crystal Cave on Flint Ridge. But the cave was remote and visitors were few. Collins had an ambition to find another cave he could open to the public closer to the main roads, and entered into an agreement with a neighbor to open up Sand Cave, a small cave on the neighbor's property. On January 30, 1925, while working to enlarge the small passage in Sand Cave, Collins became trapped in a narrow crawlway 55 feet (17 m) below ground. The rescue operation to save Collins became a national newspaper sensation and one of the first major news stories to be reported using the new technology of broadcast radio. The rescue attempt grew to become the third-biggest media event between the world wars.
