William Floyd Collins, better known as Floyd Collins, was an American cave explorer, principally in a region of Central Kentucky that houses hundreds of miles of interconnected caverns within Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest cave system in the world. In the early 20th century, in an era known as the Kentucky Cave Wars, commercial cave owners and explorers in Kentucky entered into a bitter competition to exploit the bounty of caves for commercial profit from tourists, who paid to see the caves. In 1917, Collins had discovered and commercialized Crystal Cave on Flint Ridge. But the cave was remote and visitors were few. Collins had an ambition to find another cave he could open to the public closer to the main roads, and entered into an agreement with a neighbor to open up Sand Cave, a small cave on the neighbor's property. On January 30, 1925, while working to enlarge the small passage in Sand Cave, Collins became trapped in a narrow crawlway 55 feet (17 m) below ground. The rescue operation to save Collins became a national newspaper sensation and one of the first major news stories to be reported using the new technology of broadcast radio. The rescue attempt grew to become the third-biggest media event between the world wars.

Nord Stream is a system of offshore natural gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. Adipurush is an upcoming Indian mythological film written and directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series Films and Retrophiles. On 20 September, pro-Russia authorities of the Donetsk People's Republic, the Luhansk People's Republic, as well as the occupation administrations of Kherson Oblast and Zaporizhzhia Oblast announced referendums on joining Russia on 23–27 September. The referendums are illegal under international law and are widely considered to be sham elections whose pro-Russian outcomes have been decided before voting began.

On 30 September 2022, Russia signed accession treaties formally annexing the partially occupied Ukrainian oblasts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson as part of Russia. Collectively, these four regions make up around 15% of Ukraine's territory. Russia does not fully control any of the four regions, where military hostilities are ongoing, and much of the population has fled since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The annexation was formalized in Moscow at an official ceremony in the presence of heads of the four regions and Russian president Vladimir Putin. Ukraine, the European Union, and the United Nations all stated that the annexation ceremony has no legal value. This is the first major annexation of an European territory since World War II.

The Donetsk People's Republic is a self-proclaimed state in the eastern Ukrainian Oblast of Donetsk. The proto-state is recognised only by the partially recognised South Ossetia and Russian-backed proto-state Luhansk People's Republic (LPR).
