Tyre Nichols was an African American man who died on January 10, 2023, three days after a traffic stop by officers from the Memphis Police Department. The TBI stated there was a "confrontation", followed by Nichols running and another confrontation. Nichols complained of having shortness of breath, and an ambulance was called. The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, commonly known as the speaker of the House, is the presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. The speaker is the political and parliamentary leader of the House of Representatives, and is simultaneously the House's presiding officer, de facto leader of the body's majority party, and the institution's administrative head.
