Tyre Nichols was an African American man who died on January 10, 2023, three days after a traffic stop by officers from the Memphis Police Department. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Nichols was originally stopped on January 7 for reckless driving. The TBI stated there was a "confrontation", followed by Nichols running and another confrontation. Nichols complained of having shortness of breath, and an ambulance was called. The TBI and United States Department of Justice have both opened investigations into Nichols's death. An autopsy commissioned by Tyre Nichols' family found he suffered "extensive bleeding from severe beating."
