The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It extends from the northern terminus of Port Said to the southern terminus of Port Tewfik at the city of Suez. Its length is 193.30 km (120.11 mi) including its northern and southern access-channels. In 2012, 17,225 vessels traversed the canal.

The ship was buffeted by a sandstorm and blown by strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour, causing it to lose control. The vessel collided with the bottom of the canal and got stuck, completely obstructing the canal and preventing any vessels from passing through. At least 15 other vessels are being held at anchorages and some 150 ships are queueing to pass through the canal while the situation is being resolved. As of 26 March 2021, the vessel is still wedged in the canal.

The Fritzl case emerged in 2008, when a woman named Elisabeth Fritzl told police in the town of Amstetten, Austria, that she had been held captive for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl. Fritzl had assaulted, sexually abused, and raped her numerous times during her imprisonment inside a concealed area in the basement of the family home. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.
